Week 5
I was really not understanding DOK's until class on Monday. I think I was really able to grasp it after we practiced within our groups. I was definitely not doing anything like that for my first 4 lessons! So I'll be spending a lot more time trying to use those verbs in questions towards the students- not as objectives.
Glad we went over that!
So my lesson 5 will be titled Plant Probing. I'm not completely done with it yet but it will be for first grade. The students will compare and contrast plant and tree "stems" using a venn diagram. We will observe celery stalks, bark and small log, plant stems, and other plant material. There is a lot of vocabulary . We will organize and categorize what we can or can not eat. And then I want to incorporate technology into the lesson for independent practice but haven't finished yet. I'm open for ideas!
My lesson 6 is titled. Communities. I have no yet started this lesson however I want to meet a civic's Social Studies standard so I thought about having a lesson on Urban, Suburban and Rural communities. I would read a book and show examples of these communities. Then we would discuss where we live and what community that is. Then I would place the students into groups and assign a community per group. The group is provided with large poster board and they cut out magazine clips or draw pictures of what is in their community. Each group had a rubric to follow. Lastly, the group presents their poster-board to the class. .... Now I just gotta organize my thoughts and make it look pretty and sense-able on paper :)

Rose, you have some great ideas! I am also doing all my lesson plans for first grade so it is nice to see someone else working with the same grade. We would collaborate together if we were both teachers now. For your community lesson how about adding roles within a community; mayor, police officer, fire fighter, civilian, business owners, etc. and have each student assigned their own role and ask how they contribute to their community. I bet 1st grade can be creative with their answers. :)
ReplyDeleteThat's a great idea! thank you! I could assign jobs in each community group and they can present their group roles in character! thanks! This could be a huge unit if I expand!
DeleteOoh, with celery stems you can show them how the water moves through them by putting food coloring in water and place them end of a celery stick in them. It travels up and changes the leaves to whatever color you used. It looks really cool. Might not help with this lesson, but just in case. :)
ReplyDeleteI thought about having an celery experiment too! in fact, I found a youtube video of some celery and food dye on a 30 second time-lapse so I can show the video if i'm short on time instead of doing the experiment ourselves.
DeleteI am still working on the DOK's. I am still not sure if I am doing them correctly. I am hoping I can get them incorporated into my lessons.
