Lesson Plan 1                  Persuasive Writing For 1st Grade

Standards for first grade

Text Types and Purposes
Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and provide some sense of closure.

Production and Distribution of Writing
With guidance and support from adults, focus on a topic, respond to questions and suggestions from peers, and add details to strengthen writing as needed

Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas
Describe people, places, things, and events with relevant details, expressing ideas and feelings clearly.
Produce complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation.
Conventions of Standard English
Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization,
punctuation, and spelling when writing.
Follow a writing process to plan a first draft by brainstorming and recording key ideas and
sequencing ideas into sentences and staying on topic throughout the text
       Use end punctuation for sentences.
Use conventional spelling for words with common spelling patterns and for frequently occurring
irregular words.
Spell untaught words phonetically, drawing on phonemic awareness and spelling conventions.

This was originally the lesson I wanted to teach however the cooperating teacher and I have not yet decided on a topic. Because she is trying to stay with-in the curriculum and with-in the skills of the classroom, my cooperating teacher told me that she can give me a topic the same week of my lesson and I can write it based on what information she would give me about the class. I am not sure how the other teacher's are handling our lesson plans but my teacher was shocked at how superficial the accuracy of our lesson plans. I understand her standpoint because it is so hard to plan a lesson in the middle of the year with no previous knowledge of the kiddos, curriculum and what unit the class is currently working on. So I will continue to write lesson plans but as far as which one I'll teach, I am not sure yet.

  • Use Graphic Organizer and 1 choice topic to model completing organizer with class.
  • Allow class to separate individually and write their topic and opinions/reasons.
  • Model another topic and reasons ; introduce the closing of persuasion. Show errors and discuss punctuation, grammar, spelling. Model rereading and spell checking out loud.
  • Allow class to finish their persuasive righting.
  • Group partners to proof read and discuss their advertisement persuasive writing .
  • Each student will share their product and reasons with class.

I am not sure how to share the graphic organizer on this blog but it is a basic square with 4 sections. There is a large rectangle on the top and bottom of the square for introduction and conclusion. The 4 squares are large enough for the students to write in their reasons for the lesson.

  1. (Are you sure your cooperating teacher understands the focus of the class is to write plans for content area?) Your choice of strategies and graphic organizer for this plan seem like they would be very effective. I hope you get a chance to use this or something similar when you teach your lesson. I'll be anxious to hear how the students respond. And great use of the word wall!

    1. Yes, I think the misunderstanding is between choosing a lesson that fits into the lessons that her class is currently in. Because she dwells on some subjects depending on the rate of levels of understanding, she can not fortell that much time ahead what lesson's she would need me to plan by April 7th.

      Thank you

  2. That is something that I am a little concerned about as well. It would be unrealistic and unpredictable, the teacher setting up a lesson that far ahead. At the same time, I know we do need to know something ahead of time so that we can properly prepare. Try seeing what standards he/she is working with right now and maybe create 3 loose lesson plans that are basic and that you can easily revise later when you know more accurately what the lesson should be about. That's something I will have to plan on doing as well.
